Слово like представляет собой один из наиболее интересных случаев грамматической омонимии. Оно может быть глаголом (I like plums), предлогом (It's so like him) и даже существительным (Like is gazing at like). Like как частица развилось, очевидно, из предлога. Эта частица употребляется обычно после слов, к которым относится, и считается характерной для снижено разговорного стиля. Использование частицы like сигнализирует о колебании говорящего в выборе средств выражения, ее функцию можно определить как указание на приблизительность описания. В русском языке анализируемой английской частице хорошо соответствует частица как бы (Минченков, 2001), тоже выражающая приблизительность описания:

• 'Mr. Tredwell, he was indisposed like... so it fell to me to show the parties over.' (AC1: 84)


"М-ру Тредвелу, ну, как бы не здоровилось... так что пришлось мне показывать гостям дом."


• 'She knows one of our staff here, and I gather she put the notion of this little paragraph, like, to him... ' (KA: 101)


"Она знает одного из наших сотрудников, ну и, я так понимаю, она как бы и подсказала ему эту мысль написать о вас небольшую статью."


Возможны также и другие эквиваленты like, в частности такие выражения, как скажем, так сказать, в каком-то смысле, как бы это сказать. Все они указывают на приблизительность описания.
